Car Body Restoration: 4 Must-Know Tips for Classic Cars

Posted on

Classic car restoration is an excellent method to bring a piece of vintage automotive back to life. That's especially true for rare car models that require a little extra TLC. Seasoned classic car lovers understand the time, effort, heartache and money involved in the process. If you are still new to classic cars, here are four must-do things to ensure a successful auto body restoration project.

Find the Perfect Car

Finding the ideal car alongside its antique replacement parts is your first step. If you have decided on a particular car model or make, ensure finding the spare parts won't be a problem. That way, you'll have an idea of whether to stick to OEM or settle for the replacement parts. Remember, original features are excellent when aiming for more authentic car restorations, but may be difficult to find as per the car model and make.

Select the Ideal Car Restoration Type

Classic car restoration involves four different levels: Driver, Street Show, Show Car and Concourse Restoration. Each one of these four requires more work than the last.

  • Driver restoration — The basic level that involves fixing minor cosmetic problems to make the car operational and back on the road.

  • Street show restoration — A step higher than the previous level involving fixing all major and minor aesthetic car problems

  • Show car restoration — This level will undoubtedly require an expert to complete the work, and you'll likely drive less after repair.

  • Concourse restoration — The highest auto body restoration level that's best done when aiming at adding your classic car in a private collection. Such a vehicle isn't designed for driving.

Consider Updating the Car's Safety Features

The most notable concern with vintage cars is their below-par safety features. Most lack vital essentials, such as seatbelts and airbags, that are crucial for driver and passenger safety. It's thus crucial to update all the safety elements on your vintage car.

Furthermore, you can consider upgrading other features like the air conditioning system, radio, etc. without making the changes too obvious. You can even upgrade your vintage car to a 21st-century auto by incorporating Bluetooth technology, heads-up displays and rearview cameras.

Get Ready for Setbacks

Finally, when something breaks or doesn't fit, don't let it stress you. Car body restorations are challenging and come with many setbacks. It's thus prudent to take a step back, redesign your approach and resume your project.

When something doesn't feel right, taking a break to clear your mind can give you fresh and creative ideas. The last thing you want is to waste time and money on a restoration project you'll abandon a couple of months later.
